Colonies to the Governor of lleng Kong.

(Sent 10.0 p.m., 20th May, 1929).

Lampson's telegres to Formign Office No.30 of 26th May

and your telegre of 24th May. Boxer Indemnity. Fer My insediately succeeding telegram is repetition of Foreign Office

telegram No.27 of 25th Key referred to in Lampion's telegram

of 26th Way. Ita teras were approved before the receipt of

your telegres of 24th May. On receist of that telegram

considerstion ́vas given your request that final decision

should be deferred pending the arrival of your despatch of Sth

Hay vwo mousiderad but it was felt that as negotiations with the Chinese had metually begum no reconsideration of the general principle of the decision taken by H.M.Government was practicable.

The negotiations have therefore been allowed to proceed in the

hope that it will be possible for Sir M.Lampson to carry them

te a successful conclusion before his departure from Benking.

There ramins your proposal which I understand to be that

irrespective of the general reconsideration of the policy

certain sus should be added to the alloantion to Hong Kong

University. (1) The debts due to the University by the Chinese

authorities are dealt with in the correspondence between

H.M.
